It seems with each passing decade, I catch an unexpected glimpse of myself in a mirror and think, “Who is that older gentleman?” only to realize he’s ME! Yet, while I’ll always have an image of myself that is younger (and thinner!) than reality, I am aware of how significantly that image can turn on us when we feel our appearance is not as we desire.
While definitions of beauty vary, symmetry is a common component of how most deem a beautiful face. A balanced alignment of eyes with both sides of the mouth, nose and cheeks mirroring one another has become a standard that is often used. However, to a growing number of individuals, beauty is enfolded in an aura of confidence.
In order to be confident, however, you must feel confident. So, it makes perfect sense to examine what creates a confident individual. Many would say that it’s feeling good about the impression you make on others. And, right or wrong, Americans live in a society where a large part of this impression is created by what others see on the outside.
Over the years, I’ve seen countless patients who, after years and years, decided to have a smile makeover. Today’s cosmetic dentistry offers a number of durable, natural looking and long-lasting options to improve the appearance of a smile. In some instances, for example, placing porcelain veneers on just the front six upper teeth can dramatically change the appearance of a smile, and of one’s facial appearance, in the process.
Some of you may recall a TV series that ran from 2002 to 2007 called “Extreme Makeover.” In each episode, an individual was selected for a ‘head to toe’ makeover that typically included weight loss, plastic surgery, hair and makeup, and smile enhancement. What was revealed as among key criteria for the candidates selected was their need for cosmetic dentistry. Why?
What was determined once the show began was how significantly an appearance changed with smile improvements alone. While losing weight, toning up, a nose job or brow lift were all beneficial, it was the smile that seemed to be the centerpiece of how ultimate beauty emerged.
After smile enhancements are completed, I’ve seen many patients break out in tears at the sight of the ‘new you’ they see in the mirror. And, although cosmetic dentistry can be a financial stretch for some people, I’ve never had a patient who didn’t feel their new smile was anything but “worth every cent.” Most add, “I only wish I’d done this years ago.”
Yet, it’s not what occurs in the moments after their new smile is completed that is as meaningful (to me, as a dentist) as what I see emerge over time. Many smile makeover patients lose weight, seek promotions at work or better jobs, get a new hairstyle, dress more fashionably, are more outgoing, smile more often and seem genuinely more upbeat about their lives. It’s as if their new smile uncovered a piece of self-esteem that had been hidden away behind a smile that made them feel less than who they wanted to be.
As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, science has shown the dramatic effect of a smile on our overall demeanor. Apparently, smiling causes the brain to release endorphins. These are the brain’s chemicals that are your mood-boosters. What’s amazing is in findings that even when a person fakes a smile, the brain still reacts in this positive way.
So, smiling often is a good thing. When we feel our smile is a complement to our appearance, we tend to use it more often. This creates a domino effect. Since our mood is boosted from our brain’s chemical reactions, it makes us feel more positive. Feeling more positive makes us feel more confident. And so on.
