Keeping teeth clean, free of cavities and preventing periodontal (gum) disease are important steps for good oral health. While scientific studies have shown our overall health is intricately connected to our oral health, the appearance of a smile is also important.
It’s obvious that a beautiful smile enhances facial appearance. Yet, research conducted by Beall Research & Training of Chicago cites how the benefits of an attractive smile actually go much further. In an independent study of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), a social psychologist and market research professional showed how an appealing smile can make you appear more intelligent, interesting, successful and wealthy.
Using facial photos, over 500 American adults were asked to quickly rank each on their being attractive, intelligent, successful in their career, wealthy, popular with the opposite sex, happy, friendly, interesting, kind and sensitive to others.
The photos were of one set of both males and females prior to having cosmetic dentistry and another set after treatment completion. Although the study participants were not told that smiles were a factor in the rankings, the results showed that an attractive smile does have an impact on creating a positive impression.
However, this survey focused on how smile enhancements made others feel. The positive impact on those who have an improved appearance thanks to a new smile are significant as well. Smile enhancements tend to boost self-esteem, self-confidence and feeling positive.
Smiling also makes us look younger. Smiling pulls the facial muscles upward, which creates a bit of a face lift! And, smiling is so much easier when the appearance of a smile evokes confidence.
As a dentist, I’ve seen how troubling it can be for those who have smiles that cause awkwardness or even embarrassment. Yet, today’s dentistry offers exceptional techniques and materials that can beautifully correct crooked teeth, decay, stained teeth or a ‘gummy smile.’
Some of the options to create a more confident, appealing smile include:
Whiteners – While ‘drug store’ whitening products can make improvements in the shade of natural teeth, the degree of whitening is often minor and doesn’t last very long. Too, after adding up the costs for repeated upkeep, what is spent typically outweighs the results. The whitening systems provided by a dentist give a much higher level of whitening that lasts for a long time for affordable fees. For example, our take-home whitening kit, Nite White, is practical for about any budget and gives a dental office degree of whitening with excellent longevity.
Porcelain Crowns & Porcelain Veneers – Porcelain provides the most natural luminosity and longevity available in dentistry. Porcelain crowns and veneers can beautifully recreate a smile for the most natural look and feel possible. Plus, porcelain’s durability is also exceptional to any other material used in esthetic dentistry.
Bonding – Chipped, uneven, gapped, discolored or poorly-shaped teeth may benefit from bonding. Bonding is essentially ‘painted on’ and polished to give a natural look in an affordable way that can correct many smile flaws. It can be shade-matched to blend attractively with neighboring teeth and, while not as durable or stain-resistant as porcelain, has excellent longevity for the cost. Typically, the procedure is completed in one visit.
Dental Implants – Implants are positioned in the jaw bone, restoring the same foundation as your natural teeth once had. With this foundation, implants are able to restore your ability to bite and chew foods comfortably and enable you to speak and laugh confidently. And, because the teeth attached to the implants are custom-designed for each individual, incorporating a more flattering smile is a normal part of the process.
Cosmetic Dentures – For individuals who wish to replace all upper or lower missing teeth with full dentures, modern techniques and materials enable us to create an attractive look that fills out the mouth for a more youthful appearance.
Crown-&-Bridge – For those who are missing one or several teeth in one area, a Crown-&-Bridge combination is an excellent way to replace teeth with a natural appearance. Using durable, natural-looking ceramic crowns to support a bridge of teeth, we can often create your final result in one visit using our advanced CEREC 3D computerized technology.
